Blessed to have you as my first teacher…..

Where you reach, what you achieve in life is generally dependent on the education you gain during the journey (of life). It may not be just the formal education in the classrooms, but the informal education/ values one gains through elders or by just observing nature which will matter in fulfilling life’s purpose. The initial education (generally informal) gained during the first five or six years of life is what provides the foundation for the future. This is where the parents/ elders and the observation power of the child play the most important part.  Continue reading “Blessed to have you as my first teacher….. “

Got to have a Goal to score a Goal…..

Just dreaming and imagining is not enough to be a  winner, you will only win if you decide to win, if winning is your ultimate goal. Most go wrong in selection of the aim, the goal. I have come across many young players for whom representing their state or the country is the ultimate aim. But is that enough? You got to play to win, the ultimate aim being to win for the country/ team.  Continue reading “Got to have a Goal to score a Goal…..”

Live your life your way…..Live your dreams….Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think….

A few days back, I met an old acquaintance of mine after a long time. He was a sports enthusiast and during the course of our conversation he mentioned about an experience when his raft had overturned while negotiating a dangerous rapid in a mountain river and all occupants were thrown into the turbulent water. While others managed to get safety, he was carried away by the strong currents to some distance before he could get hold of a rock protruding in the middle of the river and hung on to it for nearly 30 minutes before he could be rescued.

When asked what was going through his mind for those 30 minutes that he hung on the rock for life, and he thought death was staring in his face, he said the first response was a desperate appeal to God to come to his aid and save him, but as he spent more time hanging on to the rock the past 30 years of his life flashed through his mind. His dreams, what all he had thought to accomplish/ do in life, condition of his ailing wife who required his support, his kids, the under- construction house, everything went through his mind. He had so many unaccomplished tasks/ dreams which he had been delaying for one reason or the other. He prayed to God to save him as he was just 30 and had so much left to do in life. After his safe return from that journey his complete focus in life was on completing the tasks he had set for himself, achieving his dreams. He had seen death from close quarters and realised the worth of life and more importantly he had realised the true meaning of ‘Living’ life, living dreams.

Hearing his story, I was reminded of a song sung by Doris Day (written by Carl Sigman/ Herbert Magidson) way back in 1950.

Enjoy yourself while you’re still in the pink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself
It’s later than you think.

You work and work for years and years
You’re always on the go
Never take a minute off
To busy makin’ dough
Someday, you say, you’ll have your fun
When you’re a millionaire
Imagine all the fun you’ll have
In your old rockin’ chair

Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself while you’re still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself
It’s later than you think.
(Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself it’s later than you think)

Your heart of hearts, your dream of dreams
Your ravishing brunettes
Has left you now and she’s become
Somebody else’s pet (pity isn’t it)
Lay down that gun, don’t try my friend
To reach the great beyond
You’ll have more fun by reaching
For a red-head or a blonde

Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself while you’re still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself
It’s later than you think.
(Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself it’s later than you think)

There’s another thing I want to tell you too.

You love somebody very much
You’d like to set the date
But money doesn’t grow on trees
So you decide to wait (Foolish Fellow)
You’re so afraid that you will bite off
More than you can chew
Don’t be afraid, you won’t have teeth
When you reach ninety-two.

Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself while you’re still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy yourself
It’s later than you think.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy yourself it’s later than you think…

Each and every word of this song is so relevant even today and I think will remain relevant forever. This is exactly what life is all about, we keep delaying things constantly changing our goal posts as long as the going is smooth, when suddenly an accident throws life out of gear and we are left regretting what all we have left unfinished. We carry the worries of our securing our future too far and miss out on living and enjoying the present. Why should it take a negative event to make us consider doing something good? Why should we wait for a dark moment to happen in life to show us the light? Life is so unpredictable, earlier we realise it is the better. Make your list, set your priorities and work to achieve your goals/ live your dreams.

Life is all about choices we make. Whatever we do/ achieve is the result of the choices we make. Do not keep waiting for the right moment to start/ do something. Every moment is right, just have the will to make it your own. One doesn’t have to throw caution to winds but certain amount of risk has to be taken to achieve something new. “Do not plunge blindly, but when the only escape route is the river in spate, just jump into it, there are high chances of you reaching the bank”.

Identify your purpose in life and follow it with passion. Time doesn’t wait for anyone/ anything.

“Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself while you’re still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy yourself
It’s later than you think.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy yourself it’s later than you think…”

What is your net worth???

I felt a bit of irritation in my left eye last Saturday and attributed it to maybe a dust particle, however, by Sunday morning the irritation had turned into a real pain and the complete eye had turned red.

A visit to the doctor revealed swelling in the tissue which required a treatment for about a week to recover fully, during which the vision also remained a bit blurred.

This is how life goes on, so unpredictable, you are fit and healthy one day and within next 24 hours you may be diagnosed with the worst of the disease or meet with an unfortunate accident. As long as you are fit and healthy you can achieve anything, you are worth your weight in Gold, as it is said. You can do whatever you want, work 24 X 7 and earn as much as you want. You may feel that the entire world is at your feet or eating out of your hands. But, God forbid, the day you are diagnosed with any serious disease or meet with a serious accident, the whole world comes crashing down. You feel helpless, all your wealth is worth nothing if you can’t be cured.

It’s health which matters most and also neglected the most. In the pursuit of our dreams and most of the time in sheer quest of making money we neglect health, no physical workouts, improper diet plan. By the time you realise it may be too late. Whatever aim you have in life, remember it can be seldom achieved without the support of good health. Take care of the health, not just physical but mental health too. Take regular breaks to unwind and rejuvenate. Jog, walk, join a gymnasium or swim, do whatever you can, it will matter in the long run.

“Your true net worth cannot be measured by your wealth or property, it is actually reflected by your health. If you are not healthy, money doesn’t matter, if you are healthy no one can stop you from achieving whatever you have set your mind on”

Do you have it in you…Courage, confidence, choice….

success 1

Have a dream, follow it with passion, setbacks will be there but never give up, succeed you will. This is ‘one template fit all’ formula most motivational speakers have for most startups / new entrants. If it was all just this easy then why does one see so many failures around. For every one success story there will be many failures to read about. Well, passion, hard work are all the necessary ingredients of a success story and most people apparently have them in good amount.  Why do they still fail to achieve the desired goals?

Courage is the main virtue, most people lack. While they may have the courage to dream, most do not have enough courage to express, courage to go against the established norms, courage to take risks, courage to learn & unlearn, courage to face failures, overcome fears and the courage to get up again. Courage to own a failure, to accept mistakes, going all over again to find the right solution and moving ahead matters most in the run up to success. If you don’t have the courage to jump into the pool you will never learn swimming and just keep dreaming about it.

From courage flows ‘Self Confidence’, the most important ingredient required to break a new path. Confidence comes through education, learning from the books, contemporaries, competitors and from your own mistakes. Once you have learnt, acquired the right skills and the right company, you will move ahead with confidence ready to take risks and face any obstacle.

It’s the combination of courage and confidence which gives the power to make choices. To make a choice between the perceived right and wrong, to make the choice of taking or not taking risks. Most important of all, confidence helps you in making the choice to follow your dream when whole world appears to be against it.

“It’s the combination of Courage, Confidence and ability to make right choices which will lead you to success”

When should you quit??

Never give up, Never say die, Never quit; the favourite quotes of the proponents of positivism, the motivators form the basis of majority of the messages forwarded around, without much thought, on Social network sites/ WhatsApp since early morning.

Yes, Never ever give up on your dream because of the fear of failure, because you imagine yourself becoming a laughing stock if you fail or because you think you will never be able to manage the finances but there will be situations when you will have to take a call to change tracks in life and ‘move on’.

When should you quit? What can force you to quit? There are situations when you get bored with your profession, when you think you are not getting enough; enough money, enough time for yourself. Are these good enough reasons to quit? Money one can earn any amount but what matters most is satisfaction, happiness. Is the job giving you inner satisfaction?

Are there enough growth opportunities in what you are doing? The most compelling reason for one to quit any job is lack of growth incentives on offer. The time you feel you have started to stagnate, there is no mental growth, no learning, you are bound to get bored and performance is bound to be adversely affected. This is the time to quit, time to change path. “The ultimate aim being happiness, the time you stop enjoying the journey, it is time to change the route and/ or the means of travel”.

When there are no growth avenues, your juniors start overtaking you, frustration is bound to set in. This will not only affect your personal life but also lives of your family members. Do not force yourself to continue and in the process keep slipping down the ladder. It is time to analyse, take deliberate stock of the situation and take a call.

The indications start coming very early, in any field, of stagnation likely to set in. One should be wise enough to read these indications, take the hint and start planning a change. Yes, continuous monetary flow may get disrupted for sometime till you settle down somewhere else, but if you have prepared well, you don’t have to worry much. Keep your spouse/ parents informed and prepare them for the likely hardships they might face as you start your struggle all over again. If you explain, they will certainly understand.

“Trust your skills, trust your instincts, control your emotions, take your chances…. No use trying to give your best at a place where you are not wanted”

Be humble in victory, Graceful in defeat….Be a sport….

Football World cup 2018 is on and West Germany, the No 1 ranking football team of the world has been eliminated in the initial round having lost to Mexico (ranked No 15) and South Korea (ranked No 57). Iceland, smallest nation to qualify in the World cup, and Switzerland holding their mighty opponents Argentina and Brazil to one all draw in their respective games are the other major upsets. There have been many games where the winner has been decided in the very last minute. This clearly indicates that the ranking you enjoy doesn’t matter in the game, what matters is how much you have progressed, the hard work/ preparation and the ‘Never Give up’ attitude. The opponent’s history and ranking should not bother you, what matters is your belief in your own skill. The match is not over till the final whistle has been blown, a goal can be scored in the very last second and the entire narrative changes.

Every team, irrespective of the ranking they enjoy, is stepping out on the field with the will to win. This is what life is exactly all about. People with a ‘never say die attitude’, always willing to learn, improve their skills and work hard are bound to be the winners. Once you enter the field, do not bother about the reputation of opponents, enter with a fresh mind and belief in your own skills and you will succeed. Yes, do not forget to carry out a detailed study of the skills and abilities of the opponents; this will certainly help you in preparing well. Learn from them, use their strength and weakness to your advantage. Do not ever let the past victories go to your head or make you complacent. Every game is a new game, every team is there to win. Do not ever take any opponent lightly.

Another big takeaway from the World cup results thus far has been the sportsman spirit on display. Aptly described in Wikipedia, Sportsman spirit is an aspiration or ethos that a sport or an activity will be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect and a sense of fellowship with one’s competitors. One got to be a ‘good sport’ meaning accepting victory with humility and being graceful in defeat. This is so true in life as such. If the victories get to your head or you keep brooding over the losses for too long you are bound to fail in the long run.

“To succeed in life be a ‘good player’; Humble in victory, graceful in defeat (failure), learning from every experience and moving on”

“It’s the team which matters, individuals should work to make the team strong; When ‘Me’ becomes ‘Us’ success is bound to follow”

Don’t let someone else’s opinion become your reality….

Any invention or discovery is the result of a dream and a never say die attitude. As you set course to give wings to your dreams there will be whole lot of people around expressing opinions; mostly negative or trying to infuse caution. Most will be, intentionally or unintentionally, aimed at discouraging you. It’s up to you to take that opinion or leave it.

Any change is resisted. Most people try to discourage because they themselves either never tried or failed. The dream is yours, you have to take it to a logical conclusion. Yes, listen to opinions, take a considerate view but the final call has to be yours. Every uncharted path involves taking risks, fear of the unknown. You may have catered for 100 contingencies but it’s the 101st which will come to stare you in your face. You will not come out triumphant always, there will be partial successes/ failures which have to be taken in the stride. You don’t have to worry about what people will think. There are high chances of being laughed / mocked at every failure you face. More the failures, louder will be the laughter.

No dream is the preserve of any particular class, region or religion. Everyone/ anyone can dream and fall in love with whatever they want. Maximum pressure on a dreamer comes in the form of family name, traditions and finances. Traditions can’t be followed forever, change is a must in society, it’s your call. Hardly any dream has ever failed for want of finances. Main reason for failure is always lack of a clear vision, inability to take risks and absorb failures. When you have a clear vision and the will to follow the dream finance will follow. The flow of finance may be slow at the start but should never be the reason to hold you back. Once you have taken the first step you will find the path. “It’s better to get lost in search of your love than to sit in the cosy confines of your home and sulk all your life”. Take firm steps, at times it’s better to take even baby steps and be firmly footed than to attempt an uncalculated long leap and go down a ditch, with little chance of recovery. As long as you are alive, there will always be another chance, opportunities will keep knocking at the door.

Whatever be your dream; to be a scientist, singer, musician, dancer, pilot, mountaineer and the like; give it a sincere try. Attempt at whatever age you gather the courage to, do not die with a regret in your heart of never having attempted.

To be successful you have to first win the war waging within, convince yourself that you want it and can do it, clear your mental blocks than only you can convince others.

“Dream, take your chances, do not worry about opinions, move out, follow your love, live your life”

Life is beyond School Exams….

failures 1

June is the month of results in India. Results of the 10th and 12th standard school Board exams and all major competitive exams are declared in this month. A student who has appeared in any of these exams can be easily identified, as the month of June approaches, with the signs of nervousness which are so evident in their body language. Even the students who had supposedly under done very well, are under stress till the results are declared. Why do exams instill such fear and stress in the mind of students?

Depending on whether the result has been good or bad a period of celebration or sorrow starts. Well emotions have to be expressed and small periods of depression is natural, however what is worrisome is the increasing number of suicides which take place when the result is not on the expected line. Has the life has become so cheap that a failure in one school exam can finish it?

Life is full of exams and opportunities. A single failure doesn’t close the doors to success in future life. History is replete with examples of people who failed in school exams not once, but many times or failed to complete formal education and still went on to become role models of success in life. The only reason being that they treated failure as it ought to be treated… it is not the end. Maybe they realised that life was beyond the books. Success and failure, both, should never be taken to heart or made to burden the mind for too long. This is where the education system, both formal and informal, fails. Both do not prepare the students to face failures. Not just the parents, and teachers but most of the so-called preachers generally fail in preparing the child for life. They only prepare the students for mere school exams.

Why should a failure in school exams or love life lead a young boy / girl to suicide? This a clear sign of weak grooming. Why do these young people fail to understand that their death only affects their parents and siblings who live with the loss all their life maybe with a feeling of guilt. By taking their life they have deprived themselves of the opportunities which might have come their way to excel and more importantly they have deprived their parents / dear ones the moments of joy and happiness which they could have given them in the journey of life. Suicides are no solution, they just cause a life long pain for people left behind. Failure in exam can be easily made up by putting in that extra effort or by putting your heart into something you love.

“Life is precious …Love it …Live it….Life is certainly much beyond school exams…”

“Failures , more often than not, provide a strong base for a bright future….provided you learn from them …”

Inspiration Vs Motivation….

Summer is at its peak and with each passing day the number of people walking on the roads or in the gardens is ever increasing. There is an increased awareness of the negative effects of being overweight in the general public thanks to the numerous social networking sites. Messages regarding ill effects of being overweight are being bombarded through social sites day and night. It’s not just the roads and parks which have seen the increased footfall, even the local gyms, irrespective of availability of trainers and type of equipment, have seen a spurt in enrolment. Everyone seems to be just interested in getting into good shape. But do they actually achieve the aim they start with?

The main motivating factor, leading the general population to gyms and parks, is apparently the desire to lose weight / have a great fit body. People make resolutions to lose weight and start with a great josh but most of them are not able to maintain the momentum beyond the first week. The effort of getting up early in the morning, putting in extra hours on the road or in the gym and the advised diet control becomes too much to handle. People want to lose weight but without much effort and some fall in the trap of medicines, claiming to reduce weight within months, available off the shelf. By the time they realise these medicines have no positive effect, the financial damage has been done.

The motivation (desire to lose weight) doesn’t seem to be working in most cases. Then what’s the ans? Me and my wife have been regularly going for our morning walks since last many years. It’s a set routine of nearly 90 mins of walk (approximately 6.5 kms). People do ask us the motivation behind the daily long walks. I have got nothing to lose (not the weight for sure). We get up early in the morning and walk the 6 kms plus as it makes us feel good. Yes, daily view of the sunrise, the feel of the lovely cool breeze, the sight of the peacocks and other birds, the beautiful greenery, all add up to make our walk a wonderful experience which we will never want to miss. We walk to experience the beauty and as a side effect it helps us to remain fit, to an extent.

The issue is of Motivation vs Inspiration. Majority of the people are being forced by the desire to lose weight or remain fit, to take up morning walks or join a gym. This motivation is not strong enough to help them sustain their resolution. What is required is Inspiration and not motivation. The feel-good factor is missing in most cases. You should love the walk or exercising in the gym. This love / feel good factor will help you persist and sustain with your daily walks / workouts. It’s quite simple “Love what you do; Do what you love”. When you are being forced out of bed and made to walk / workout in the gym, the love is missing.

“Love what you do …. love will help you face the failures ….help you persevere, persist and finally succeed…”

“ Be Inspired ( Self – actualization)….Do not wait for a push (motivation ) which may land you at a place you never wanted (You have no control over the push)”
