Posted by I visited Dharamshala last year. Located in the shadow of Dhaula Dhar range, it is another favourite of tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh. It is the headquarter of District Kangra.
The beautiful location….
The cool climate, the pines, rhododendrons and the tea gardens around give Dharamshala a unique beauty. The place has an average elevation of 1450 meters. All the features combined made it a natural choice for British Army to establish a cantonment here. It was long occupied by the Gorkha troops.
It is an ideal destination for trek lovers. A number of trekking trails originate from Dharamshala.
The roads are narrow and one should come prepared for the traffic jams during peak tourist season. The place has some lovely eateries and cafes. HPCA cricket stadium is an added attraction.
Tibet connection….
The Tibetan settlement started in 1959 when the then Prime Minister Mr Nehru allowed Dalai Lama and his followers to settle in Dharamshala. Tibetan government in exile was established in 1960 at McLeod Ganj. The Library of Tibetan works and Archives was opened by Dalai Lama in 1970.

Dharamshala has a monsoon influenced weather. The best season to visit is in autumn and spring. One can take the road route from Chandigarh (Approximately 250 kms) or via Pathankot (91Kms). The closest domestic airport is Gaggal Kangra approximately 15 Kms away. It receives flight from across the country via New Delhi. The nearest International Airport is Amritsar.
I had taken the road route from Chandigarh. It is a beautiful, enjoyable drive of nearly 5 hours duration. The road is lovely and the surroundings picturesque. The flight schedules do get affected by the weather conditions.

Been to Palampur twice in recent times but missed the Cricket Stadium both the times while going to Dharmshala and Mcleodganj. Shall go there for sure next time. Nice blog but was hoping for more about the places around with their historical background and little bit of more info. Regards
