Sonamarg …..The golden meadow…

Posted by

Kashmir has so much to offer to a passionate traveller. Every place is as good if not better than the other. The beauty gets deeply ingrained in the heart and mind because of which the desire to go back one more time always remains. Bidding goodbye to the beautiful valley of Gulmarg was not easy but the call of Sonamarg was as strong We left from Gulmarg at 9 am and after a lovely road drive of three hours reached Sonamarg at 12 pm. The road is beautiful and the reddish golden leaves of Maples at Gund and Kangan made the picture mesmerising.

The Valley…

The place ….

Sonamarg is located at an altitude of 2730 m approx 80 kms from the Srinagar airport. It is well connected to Ladakh and Srinagar by road. It is one of the most beautiful valley of the country because of the lofty snow-clad peaks, the beautiful green meadows, the meandering river and the pines. Sonamarg brings a traveller closer to the beautiful countryside of Kashmir.

In Sonamarg, one can hike or hire a pony to the Thajewas glacier located at 9186 ft and enjoy the nature. A fit traveller will take about 30 minutes to reach the glacier base through a X-country route. Though one may feel a bit out of breath initially but going is not that difficult. The golden rule in hills is to take a break whenever you feel out of breath and in five minutes you will feel good. The pony ride is also a good option. Sonamarg is ideally suited for hiking. The videos will give a good idea of the place.

Sonamarg is the gateway to Ladakh. Zozilla pass is just 27 kms, Kargil 123 kms and Leh approx. 340 Kms. Baltal, the start point of trek to Amarnath cave is located 15 kms from Sonamarg. One can plan a road trip from here to Leh or a road trip cum trek to the Holy cave.

We stayed at Sonamarg for a night. There are many budget hotels available both private and government to choose from. The choice is up to the traveller and the budget consideration.

Next online is the trip to Drass/ Kargil
